THE BIRD BATH

As I was saying, a garden's not a garden ....

The grass is a bit wintery still. Perched above is a Wattle Bird, watching, waiting.

I've often thought grass is the perfect groundcover. It was people's perception of perfection that got in the way. A respiring blanket. Protector of soil. Habitat for the minature.

Scott actually down here there's considerable debate about grass, or rather lawn which is what I think we're talking about, because of its high water needs. And it takes a lot of work - horizontal hedging I call it!.

Anyway, we manage.

Are you familiar with Michael Pollan? In his early book Second Nature, there's this lovely meditation on the North Amercian fetish for perfect lawns and the suspicion that none shall rest till America can be mown uninterrupted from sea to shining sea.

The very name "wattle bird" is pleasing. And now I am reminded that our seasons are upside down when compared to yours. So fascinating and disconcerting!
